Almagro Tourist InformationAlmagro, an atmospheric town in central Spain, was captured by the Order of Calatrava during the Reconquest, and hence the castle of Calatrava la Nueva was built to the south west of the town. The relaxed nature of this town is characterised by its narrow cobblestone streets and strings of whitewashed houses. Almagro is very impressive architecturally, due partly to the legacy left behind by the Fugger brothers, who during the 16th century settled in the neighbouring town of Almaden. In addition, Almagro boasts its colonnaded stone Plaza Mayor, with distinctive enclosed, green balconies. If architecture fails to impress you, then the towns world renowned classical theatre festival, held every July, surely will.
