Avila Tourist InformationAvila is the highest provincial capital in Spain, at 1131 metres above sea level, and its centre is surrounded by finely preserved medieval walls. From these walls, brilliant views of Los Cuatro Postes can be seen, the place where St. Theresa, who was born in the city was caught by her uncle having run away from home. The walls were built in the eleventh century and are over 2km long. Within Avila is a historic cathedral, with an unfinished warlike exterior, decorated with beasts and wild men, and a mixture of a Romanesque and Gothic style interior. Just outside the city walls, the Iglesia de San Vincente is noted for its ornamented belfry, and is perhaps Avilas most Romanesque church.
