The region covers an area of 41,602 square kilometers and consists of two provinces, Caceres and Badajoz. The region borders Portugal to the west, Andalucia to the south and Castilla la Mancha to the east. The total population is about one million. Merida with 51,000 inhabitants is the capital of the region. Extremadura is crossed from east to west by the rivers Tagus and Guadiana. The history of this region dates back to pre-Roman times when cave dwellers lived in the area. Over time many different civilisations have left their mark on the region.
